Col. Harlan Sanders died in Louisville, Kentucky, of pneumonia on December 16, 1980. He had been diagnosed with acute leukemia the previous June. This portrait of him was taken the day he was released from the hospital after the diagnosis. The photographer and reporter had been late making it to the hospital for his release and an opportunity to see him. To counter that mishap, they drove to the Cols. home outside the county (I think it was near Frankfurt, KY) and interviewed and photographed him there. As the reporter walked out the front door, the Col. turned in his seat to view him and faced into the light from the door way, then this image was made. old bw portfolio
