Col. Harlan Sanders died in Louisville, Kentucky, of pneumonia on December 16, 1980. He had been diagnosed with acute leukemia the previous June. This portrait of him was taken the day he was released from the hospital after the diagnosis. The photographer and reporter had been late making it to the hospital for his release and an opportunity to see him.
