When I arrived from Los Angeles to Miami, the pilot announced all the highways through Miami were closed due to rioting. It wasn't long before I was covering more than just Super Bowl XXIII week which the Los Angeles Times had sent me there to cover. This was made as a sniper firing at these officers had them pinned down. Five photographers including me and Brian Smith, then with the Miami Herald, were also pinned down while standing shoulder to shoulder behind the telephone pole in the background when the officers were underfire a few minutes earlier. I approached the officers when the firing stopped only to find we came under fire again. I made this frame as they reacted then I jumped into the patrol car. old bw portfolio
